The Best Road Trips in Wales
Wales is home to some of the UK’s best driving roads and breathtaking scenery which make the country an ideal place for a road trip. If you are planning a Welsh road trip and need some inspiration, here are some of our favourite routes and locations to explore.
Cardigan Bay
If you are interested in a road trip that features non-stop coastal views and beach spots, this is the one for you. From Aberdaron to St Davids, you can follow the curve of Cardigan Bay for a stunning road trip which will be around 180 miles long.
Aberdaron beach is great for fossil hunting and seashell collecting, and from here, you will pass through Snowdonia to admire beautiful mountain views and you may want to stop off here and enjoy a hike.
Aberystwyth is a good place to rest your head for a night, with excellent dining options and a buzzing nightlife. Once you are well rested you can drive through Pembrokeshire, which offers plenty of attractions and end your trip in St Davids, enjoying some time at Whitesands Bay which is popular for watersports.
North Wales
The route along the A55 from Flint to Holyhead is another great option with plenty of fascinating historical and cultural spots along the way. Flint Castle is rich with history and the perfect attraction to kick off this road trip with.
It is certainly worth spending some time in the seaside towns of Colwyn Bay and Llandudno, especially if the weather is kind. Then, just across the river you will find Conwy Castle which is truly a sight to behold.
As you travel from Conwy toward Bangor, you’ll be able to enjoy ocean views on your right and mountain scenery on your left. You may want to stop off in Snowdonia, and we would recommend Aber Falls.
Make your way over the bridge to Anglesey, which is full of attractions including impressive castles and churches, beaches and wildlife hotspots.
South Wales
The other end of the country is just as good for road trips in Wales. If you have time to travel over 300 miles from Cardiff all the way West and then back around the Brecon Beacons to end your journey in Chepstow, this is a road trip you’d never forget.
Cardiff offers amazing restaurants, bars and events and there is always something interesting going on in the capital city. From here, head west and explore Swansea, the Gower Peninsula and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
After a brief introduction to the west coast, loop back toward the Brecon Beacons National Park where you can find scenic walking and hiking routes. As you venture through the Beacons, feel free to visit us at Bob Davies Car Sales in Ebbw Vale before ending your trip in Chepstow, where you can admire the oldest preserved castle in Wales.
