Top Car Safety Features You Need

When buying your next car, price, performance and design aren’t the only things to consider. Safety features are an integral part, but with there being so many and having to decipher all the acronyms, it can be hard to keep up. That’s why we’re going to go over the top safety features you need to look out for.

ABS - Anti Lock Braking System

First off we have ABS. This stands for anti-lock braking system and its job is to prevent the wheels from slipping when you suddenly brake.

Sensors on each wheel are able to determine when your wheels lock, stop moving and start to skid. The ABS system then kicks in, by pumping the brakes. As a driver, you’ll know it’s working as you’ll feel the brake pedal suddenly drop, followed by a rapid pulsing sensation

AEB - Autonomous Emergency Braking

AEB is a relatively new safety technology, and is vastly becoming fitted as standard. Sensors installed in the car are able to detect and monitor the proximity of vehicles and other obstacles in front. If a collision is imminent, and the driver doesn’t take any action, the AEB system will essentially perform an emergency stop.

If you do buy a vehicle with AEB, your insurance premium may be lower too over other models without it.

ESC - Electronic Stability Control

Manufacturers are now required by law to install ESC in all vehicles. The system is able to control the engine and the brakes and keep the car stable and in control. The clever thing about this piece of technology is that when a skid is likely to happen, it can preempt it before it does.

Lane Assist/ Lane Departure Warning System

If you start drifting out of your lane, whether that be due to fatigue or just a general loss of concentration, lane assist alerts the driver either through an audio warning or the steering wheel will vibrate. Some more advanced systems even automatically adjust the steering for you to keep you in the lane without you having to do anything.

Blind Spot Warning Systems

These systems monitor the road on each side of your car, and if there is a car adjacent to you when you’re about to switch lanes, a warning light will show in the door mirror and potentially even an audio warning to alert you.

ACC - Adaptive Cruise Control

Adaptive cruise control is able to monitor the speed of the car in front of you and determine when to slow down and vice versa with speeding up. It’s becoming a common feature that’s currently found in cars such as SEAT, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen

All this new, cutting edge technology aims to make driving safer, in a more intelligent and seamless way. However, to get your hands on the most up to date safety tech out there, you’ll need an up to date car model.
